Cochlear Implant Surgery

Cochlear implant surgery refers to the procedure wherein an electronic device is implanted surgically under the skin behind the ear. This type of procedure is performed on people who have hearing impairment who do not benefit from their hearing aids.
Cochlear implant surgery is done under general anesthesia and is normally an outpatient surgery. It usually requires a post-surgery therapy to adapt with the electronic device.

The electronic device consists of an external portion (microphone, speech processor and transmitter) and internal portion (receiver, stimulator and an electrode array).

This type of surgery is not ideal for people with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Children and adults with severe hearing impairment that can either be congenital and acquired are good candidates for cochlear implant surgery.
