Ectropion

Ectropion is an abnormal eye condition that usually involves the lower eyelid. Ectropion makes the eyelid turn outwards. It is known as a common condition in newborns with Harlequin type ichthyosis. It can also appear when the tissue of the lower eyelid starts to deteriorate.

Causes
There are numerous possible causes of ectropion. These causes may include: congenital, aging, facial burns, scarring, allergic, orbital cysts, chronic dermatitis, stroke and many more.

Treatment and Procedures
The type of procedure for ectropion may depend on the etiology, although the common treatment for ectropion is through surgery. The following are some of the latest treatments for ectropion: Metronidazole, Doxycyclin, Erythromycin and Oestrogen.

Prevention
Prevention may depend on the cause of the ectrpopion. In most cases ectropion is not avoidable, though lubricating ointments may help avoid corneal problems.

Visiting an ophthalmologist regularly will help prevent further development of ectropion. If left untreated, eye complications such as permanent redness and irritation may occur.
